Pork Roast Day 2 (Cuban Sandwiches)

by Amanda @ A Few Short Cuts on July 10, 2009

Day two of our Cuban style pork roast is going to make some delicious Cuban Sandwiches. I know some of you don’t know what a Cuban sandwich is, and for that I am sorry. They are amazing! Growing up around Tampa there were, and are, shops everywhere that sell Cuban Sandwiches. To this day when I take a bite I think of the beach! Every time my dad would take me to the beach when I was little we would stop and grab a Cuban, some Chips, and a soda.

Now that I am across the state you wouldn’t think they wouldn’t be so hard to find, but they are. I have started to make my own sandwiches when I am hungry for them. It is much more economical that way too. A large sandwich in a shop can cost upwards of $6.

Now, you can have your own Cuban Sandwich.

Cuban Sandwich
———————
  • Yesterday’s Pork Roast sliced thin as you can by hand
  • sliced deli ham (pre-packaged is fine)
  • Swiss Cheese
  • Sandwich Pickles
  • Mustard
  • Cuban Bread
  • Mayo (optional)
  • Lettuce (optional)
  • Tomato (optional)

—————————–

Slice open loaf of Cuban bread so sandwich can be made inside.
If your local store doesn’t carry Cuban Bread you could substitute French or Italian Bread.
A traditional Cuban only has mustard on the bread. I like mine with Mayo and Mustard.
Spread your choice on the bread.
Now build your sandwich.
Place the Pork, Ham, & Swiss Cheese on the inside.
Again a traditional Cuban doesn’t have lettuce and tomato, but at my house they do!
So, if you would like to add them now is the time!
Put the top on and there you have a Cold Cuban.

If you would like yours pressed, or hot (the only way my hubby likes his).
You will need a sandwich press or a hot skillet with something heavy to put on top of the sandwich, like another skillet, or a brick covered with aluminum foil.

Place some butter in the hot skillet.
Place sandwich in.
Spread butter on the top of the sandwich so it doesn’t stick to the second skillet or brick.
Let it heat until sandwich is pressed and cheese melts as desired.

Here is a picture of the cold version!
My lunch today!

These sandwiches are great to make for parties!
Just cut into smaller pieces and place on a tray.

They are also great for picnics, or a dinner on a hot summer day!
Just serve with chips and cold drinks!

Not to mention the cost involved!

Pork = Free (leftovers from yesterday)
Ham= $2.50 (1/2 lb from the deli
Cuban Bread= $2.29 (Cheaper in Tampa, or if you use Italian.)
Mustard = on hand
Mayo= on hand
Pickles= $2.00 approximately (a jar)
Swiss= $2.50 a package (look for it on sale or with coupon)

Total $9.29
Now divide that by 4
$2.32 a sandwich!

That is a big savings from the $6.00 sandwich you could purchase.
Plus, you will have pickles and extra cheese in the fridge!

Enjoy your sandwich! I know I did!

This sounds delicious. I’ve had cuban sandwiches before but have never made my own. What type of sandwich pickles do you use? Dill, Bread and Butter or something else?
Thanks!
