Halloween Treat: Halloween Popcorn Balls

by Amanda @ A Few Short Cuts on October 23, 2009

DSCN2497We love to make the holidays a big deal at my house.  This year is hard because the 2 older one want to do things and the littlest distroys them.   Oh the joys of three children!

On Halloween we usually don’t do a lot of Trick or Treating.   We come back early and have a movie night and treats.  We watch Monsters INC or It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.  The kids have  a ton of fun.

They also love these popcorn balls.  They are really easy and yummy too!

Halloween Popcorn Balls

  • 6-8 cups Popcorn
  • 1 bag marshmallows
  • 2 TBSP Butter or Margarine
  • food color (optional)
  • 1/2 cup candy cornDSCN2484

We are going to make these just like rice crispy treats.  They are even easier in the microwave!

I popped 2 bags of popcorn…lightly salted plain kind.

Then in a large Micowave safe bowl I placed the bag of marshmallows and butter. Now is when you want to add the food coloring if you want to  make you popcorn ball colorful!DSCN2487

Microwave on High for 1 minute.

Stir and then return to the microwave  in 30 second increments until the marshmallows are melted.  DSCN2489

I have a HUGE BOWL!  This is what I recommend. Get out you biggest bowl. Place the Popcorn inside.   Now pour the marshmallow mixture over the corn and stir.  Add the Candy Corn.DSCN2496

Now, butter your hands or spray them with Cooking spray.  Grab handfuls of the mixture and shape them into balls.  Place them on a wax paper lined cookie sheet.  Store in air tight bags.DSCN2497

Makes about 9 popcorn balls!

I marked these Dairy Free Gluten Free.   I don’t think Marshmallow have gluten.  You guys that have been doing this awhile let me know!

Ok…these look like the easiest, yummiest popcorn balls I’ve ever seen a recipe for! Other recipes are so complicated(that I’ve seen). This one, even I can actually do!
And I love your family Halloween tradition. My son is 1 this year, so we are beginning traditions. I think I will have to adopt your Halloween movie tradition!
Thanks so much. I love all your posts!

Good evening Amanda! I so wanted to try these for Halloween but ran out of time. I’m hoping to try them as Christmas treats instead and wanted to ask you advise on candies in place of the candy corn~ I was thinking M & M’s but not sure how that might work or if you had a better suggestion.
