Tide You Over Tuesday: Homemade Corn Dogs

Yep,  I did it!  I made corn dogs!  My kids and their allergies have forced me to make alot of things that I would have probably just bought under normal circumstances.  Since my son can’t have wheat, and corn dogs were one of his favorites, I decided there was no time like the present to come up with these bad boys.  Now, have you bought corn dogs lately??  Why are they so expensive.  Hot dogs and corn meal aren’t expensive ingredients.  So, why do we think it is acceptable to pay $6 for a box of corn dogs?

You guys aren’t paying crazy prices anymore!  I have a super easy corn dog recipe that you can even make ahead and freeze, just like the ones at the store!  Next time you find a great BOGO hot dog sale stock up and make these bad boys!  You will be glad you did!

As I mentioned this recipe can be made GFCF (Gluten Free and Dairy Free).  In fact, the ones in the pictures are GFCF.  That is why it took me a couple tries to get the recipe just right.  There are tons of Corn Dog recipes out there, but not many that can be made GFCF!

I will admit, just because my kids have allergies doesn’t mean I like to eat their “special” foods.  These were so good!  Maybe it was the fact that my house smelled like the fair for half the day.  That in itself is a good reason to make them.:)  Here is the recipe.  I even added a little VLOG (video blog) for part of it!  Enjoy!

Homemade Corn Dogs

Homemade Corn Dogs Printable Version

  • 1 pkg Hot Dogs
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • ½ Cup Buttermilk (or milk with 1 tsp. vinegar)
  • ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ¼ cup All Purpose Flour (or GF Flour mix)
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 Tbsp. Sugar

Directions

Heat oil in a fryer to about 350 degrees.

Cut up Hot Dogs into bites, or place whole hot dog on stick. Pat hot dogs dry so that batter sticks better.

In a medium bowl mix all ingredients together.

Dip hot dogs in the batter and fry in hot oil until brown.

Extra hot dogs can be frozen after cooked and reheated in the microwave just like store bought!

**GFCF**

For Gluten Free Dairy Free Use:  ½ cup plain soymilk.  Also, I used Bob’s Red mill All-purpose Flour mix, and 1 tsp xanthum gum.

They turned out super!

I am sharing this recipe over at The W.H.O.L.E. Gang.  Check it out for more great recipes!

You rock girl!! These look great!!!

I know doing the GF and dairy thing is hard. Dairy is an issue for me so I have to do both too.

I actually think the Dairy thing is an issue with my DH and daughter too, but I’m not pushing that at this moment.. LOL.

    Have a great day!

Thanks for the inspiration! My youngest is wheat, milk, peanut, tree nut, and egg allergic. I needed some inspiration and guidance on getting more creative…we have been in a allergy free rut! I will try with egg replacer and hope for the same results! Thanks!
