Tide You Over Tuesday: Onion Rings

In the rat race, which I call my life, I still try to make things from scratch.  My hubby loves homemade Onion Rings.  I don’t make them often, not because it is hard, but because they probably aren’t the healthiest thing in the world.  So, when he requested them this week I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to share them with you.  These really are simple and taste amazing.

Don’t be scared to add seasonings to the batter.  That is a great way to make the recipe your own. The chili powder gives these onion rings a great flavor.  The sweeter the onion the better in my book.

I do have a recipe for dairy free onion rings, and I am currently working on making it gluten free.  My son isn’t a fan of onions, so it wasn’t on my priority list until now. I will post it as soon as I have it right.  My kitchen needs a big “Test Kitchen” sign, I swear!

Sorry, I am running behind.  My house is a little more chaotic than usual this morning. I try to type my recipes up at night, but I get sucked in the “Dancing with the Stars” last night.  One of my guilty pleasures.  I have been trying to type this up all morning and I just haven’t been able to sneak away until now.  ENJOY!

Onion Rings Printable Version

  • 1 Large Sweet Onion
  • 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • Vegetable Oil for frying

Directions

Heat oil to 350 degrees

Slice onion into rings.

Mix the flour, milk, egg, and seasoning together with a whisk to make batter.

Dip the onion in the batter. Shake off the excess and toss it in the hot oil.

Fry for 1-2 minutes on each side. Until golden brown.

Remove and place on a plate with paper towels, Salt immediately.

Serve with dipping sauce!

I completely intended to fill the plate before taking the picture, but I had some man standing over my shoulder asking if he could have them yet.

~” Now?  Why do I have to wait?  Just hurry and take the picture!  Why are you taking another?  Seriously?! Can I eat them now?!“~

Dipping Sauce

  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • ¼ mayo

Whisk both ingredients together.  Add salt and pepper if desired.

Let me know what you guys think?!  Enjoy!

I made these tonight and here is my experience with making them ….hopefully it will benefit one of ya’ll.
~I didn’t dip the onions in the batter like Amanda had suggested I just tossed them all in the mixing bowl and mixed them around. Worked like a charm.
~ I’m sure dipping works fine but I was trying to hurry…which by the way is not the best thing to do. It took me an hour from start to finish (I used 4 normal size onions.)
~Take the time and drop one onion ring at a time…not a big handful…because you know…you’ll get a big onion blob.(Don’t ask me how I know this) 
~Cook your rings at heat level seven or lower…even if you’re in a hurry…. because 8 is to high and you might just burn them…again don’t ask me how I know this. 

And please make sure you grab a clean bowl for the dipping sauce. Somehow I mixed up which container I pulled out for the sauce and used my daughter’s bowl that she used to hold bubbles. NO WONDER the sauce tasted so weird. Thank goodness I tossed it out before serving it to the kids.
I really need to start a blog Sorry Amanda.
Anyways I liked the onion rings they were yummy!! Thanks.

Too funny! I am guessing you made a ton of onion rings?! I usually don’t make that many cause just me and the hubby eat them…and 1 stray kid (the one without allergies).

I am so glad you liked them!

It’s so funny how every busy mom can relate with the bubble bowl. :) If it didn’t have bubbles any it, it has held some kind of kid concoction! Thanks for commenting with your tips!

The picture shows an egg, but the list of ingredients does not include an egg. Does it have an egg or not?
    Thanks for the recipe!

Made these tonight to go with hamburgers. Great flavor but I am not sure what I did wrong because they looked nice and golden brown but they were not cripsy.
