I have cooked them in a crock pot; but be very careful about the amount of salt you add. With my first try they were too salty, but tried again and lowered the amount of salt. To me the best way is a very large pot with a lot of water and salt to your taste.

I love this Ruth! Thank you! I did notice that my peanuts tasted a little better this year in my new cast iron dutch oven. Now, if I could just get those tomatoes to grow a little faster in my garden I could make a big pot of tomato gravy! :)

Just wanted to offer that my friends here in Smyrna, Georgia have been making these peanuts for years and years. They comment that the pot is the key ingredient and they have old well-used heavy duty cast iron pots that are very deep and large. Another reason to seek out yard sales and hunt down those old well-loved pots. Also if there is a chance you can use a gas stove rather than electric, apparently that helps also. And they tell me not to try and rush the process. The longer on the stove at a low heat, the better. Just like our northern tomato sauce (gravy as we call it). Has to simmer and cook forever.
We will eat no sauce/gravy or hot peanuts before their time!
