Halloween Craft: Paper Mache Candy Bowls

The kids and I have been looking for unique Halloween Crafts and this one was a winner! I used to love doing paper mache when I was a kid.  I just don’t remember the having to have patience part. :)  Anyway, if you are looking for something to do with your kids this weekend check this out!

You will need…

  • Balloon
  • Piece of cardboard
  • Newspaper
  • white glue
  • paint
  • Pipe cleaner and googly eyes optional

Ok, You are going to blow up the balloon, and tape it to a piece of cardboard cut into a circle.  Size doesn’t really matter.  The cardboard circle will be the base of your bowl.

In a bowl mix together equal parts elmers glue and water.  This will be the paste to hold things together.

Now start tearing the newspaper, dip it into the glue mix, squeeze off excess glue and place around balloon and cardboard.  We used a bowl to hold the balloon up while we were working.

You will want to cover the balloon several times.  We did atleast 3 layers of newspaper to make the bowl sturdy enough.

This is a great project to keep the kids busy for a while.  I just gave them the newspaper and the bowl of glue and they did it all themselves. When they are finished you will want to set these out of the way to dry overnight.

The next day take a pin or a sharp knife and poke a hole in the top.  You will hear the balloon leaking air.  The kids love that part!

I then cut the top off of our bowl.  I pulled the balloon out, and got the kids ready to paint!

In the meantime…they found several uses for our creation.  They now want to make more for Halloween masks.

The kids got busy painting.  I had one request a spider and one a pumpkin. So, we painted accordingly.

You can get as creative as you want with these.  This was my kids’ project so I let them take over with the decorations.

Here is the finished products…

We attached pipe cleaners for the spiders legs.  I was also told that spiders have 8 eyes.  Thank goodness I had plenty of googly eyes!

Now, we just need some goodies to fill these bad boys up!

If you are looking for more great craft ideas, we made frankenstein last year.  Check him out!
