I am baking and packing. Ok, I am not crazy I promise. My kids still have to eat! Since we are food allergy city around here we can’t say, “Ok day one we are going to stop at Sonic and get lunch.” That just isn’t going to happen. Instead I have to meal plan for the road trip ahead.
No, it doesn’t sound like fun. Not in the least bit. LOL. However, I know that there are others in the same boat I am in. I thought I would tell you how I am doing it. Not that it is perfect, but at least you might get some ideas.
First things first. I am hoping to pack enough for 3 days…at least. That will cover the road trip food. With 3 kids we will need Breakfast, Lunches, Snacks, Dinners. I am planning on taking 2 coolers. One with food for in the van; Breakfast, Lunches, and Snacks for the day. Cooler 2 will be home to dinners, and supplies (bread, Peanut butter, jelly, etc.). Of course paper towels, and wet wipes will be thrown it somewhere.
I am making the following to take with…
- Corn dogs (Yay Hotel microwave)
- Granola Bars
- Monster Cookies
- Rice Krispie Treats
- Banana Blueberry Muffins
I am planning on mapping out where the grocery stores are by the hotels we are staying at. That way I can run for quick items. That will hopefully cover dinners, chips, lunch meat. I don’t really plan to come out cheaper than eating out (although I might). I just want to make it through the trip with happy, healthy, fed kids.
Do you have any tips on traveling with food allergies? We would love to hear them!

I have no suggestions but you have helped me so much with my own daughters food allergies (milk/soy/pears/wheat/shelfish/peanuts/treenuts) by making our own chicken nuggets, etc that i wanted to thank you for posting this for everyone. We hope to make a long road trip maybe at the end of the year and this is great advice. I hope you move is easy and the drive short and cant wait to hear more about it.
We have a family of food allergies too. (Potatoe, Dairy, Tree nuts/Peanuts,. Eggs). If we have to eat out we check the restaurant’s website for their nutrition information. Most that I’ve come across have a PDF of the food allergens in all of their meals/products. If they do not have it on their website, we don’t eat there! I print off the list & bring it w/ us. Good luck!
