Tide You Over Tuesday: Cheese Grits Casserole

cheese grits

I have such a hard time finding things that the family can eat for breakfast.  Cereal is always an old standby.  Then there are muffins…my weakness! But there is one breakfast food that’s aroma can get me to the kitchen in a trance. GRITS!

Oh my, give me a bowl of piping hot grits with a pat of butter and a little bit of salt…and I am one happy girl!  Now, my hubby likes sugar on his grits, which I will never understand. LOL  However, this casserole pleases everyone!

Cheese Grits Casserole

Tips

  • Grits are gluten free…YAY!
  • Serve as a dinner side dish instead of breakfast or brunch.  Just as filling and delicious!
  • Great brunch side dish to this French toast casserole

  1. i have lots of instant grits in my pantry, can i use them for this recipe? maybe if i cooked them by the package directions, then added the remaining ingredients…?

  3. oohh eeee…LOL…I grew up on Grits…love them too. Funny my dad only eats them with sugar too…he eats rice the same way. Like cereal I am thinking.
Anyway…we eat grits with many things just not breakfast…shrimp, fried fish, and, breaded cube steak with homemade gravy and onions. My granny would take her cold left over grits…slice it…and fry…and eat with good syrup.
    Thanks…and, yep, I am a southern gal! :)

  5. I have to try this with the homemade deer sausage (my husband makes ours). Oh wow, I’m wanting this tomorrow night. I see a change in the menu at our house.

Oh my. I think I will be making this for Easter breakfast! I usually just boil grits and serve them with butter. My dad always ate his with sugar too and despite that, all 6 kids followed my mom and eat ours with butter and salt. Shrimp and grits is a wonderful treat when we are visiting family in Charleston! I’ll never forget when we moved to Massachusetts and I had a friend sleep over. My mom made grits for breakfast and the friend looked at them on her plate and said, “People really eat this?” Eat them and LOVE them!

    • Caroline,

These are perfect for Easter Breakfast/Brunch! So yummy! I laughed about what your friend said. It is very true. People from other places look at you like you are crazy. :) BUT I love a big bowl of grits. :) Guess it kinda makes my roots show.
