When you begin to coupon you discover that it is rare to find a coupons for produce. Not to mention, even if you do have a coupon, it isn’t going to be the same quality for what you would get from a local farm.
I am a Florida girl. I love to take the kids to pick Strawberries and blueberries. It is an adventure for the kids. Plus, they get a lesson in where food comes from, and how hard people work to get it to the stores. I think it is wonderful for kids to gain that sense of appreciation. If we don’t pick it ourselves there are always those super nice roadside stands, or local farmers markets.
What if you can’t find what you are hungry for? What if it isn’t in season? Well, eating fresh produce takes some planning. You need to freeze it or can it for the off season. Take corn for example. We buy it when it is at its peak and super cheap, shuck it, and put it up in the freezer.
When it comes to my beloved Strawberries. We eat as many as we can. Then we roll ourselves to the kitchen and make jelly, cookies, cakes, and freeze a bunch for later. There is always a need to have Strawberries on hand! Especially for smoothies!
The point is. You can find local grown produce for more reasonable than you can at the store. It is much healthier for you. It is certainly better for the environment than the produce that is imported. I love this site for finding local farms. It is called PickYourOwn.Org. Not only do they tell you where to find U-Pick farms. There are directions for canning and freezing your produce, picking tips and more.
There is also a site called Local Harvest. Enter your zip code and it will list the closest farms and farmers markets and their contact info.
Both of these are great resources to have up your sleeve.
So, enjoy this beautiful HOT Summer and take your kids to a local farm for a day!
