It was 5 PM and the kids kept jumping around…..
Mom, what’s for dinner?
Mom, what are you doing?
Mom, I’m bored?
Mom, nobody wants to play?
Mom, what are we going to do tomorrow?
I finally got up out of my chair and said, “Go find your shoes. Let’s go.” They all looked at me stunned and scattered. In record time shoes were grabbed and we were out the door.
Now…..I had no clue where we were going ~giggle~ but at this point we were committed…..and I was on a budget. Thank goodness for smartphones! After a quick google search I learned it was kids eat free night at Denny’s! WOO HOO! We all ate for around $20 which is less than what fast food would have cost. Then I got those stares again.
Hey Mom, what are we going to do now?
One of my tried and true mom secrets is….When all else fails go to the pet store. It is FREE, and fun, and air conditioned. My kids could spend hours in their looking at all of the animals. SERIOUSLY. I typically have to make them leave. So off to Petsmart we went. Keep in mind that we already have the best dogs in the world, my son is allergic to cats, so I was fairly certain I was in the clear. If I had only known.
We walked around for a while and my son discovered the creepy crawly things. You know, the lizards, snakes, turtles, etc. I HATE FROGS! I have a STRONG DISLIKE for lizards, that is so strong it could be mistaken for hate. I would much rather have something cute and fluffy than something scaly and slimy in my house. Within minutes….
Mom can I get a snake?
Not in a million years! There was a convenient sign in front of it that said it grows to 60″! That is as big is me! (Yes, I am short, but still!)
How about a bearded dragon? It says beginner pet and they don’t get that big. Look it’s a baby….and I have the money to pay for everything.
That came out as a run on sentence. He seriously said it all as fast as he could before I could cut him off. Then, as though it was planned out, my 12 year old chimes in.
I have money too! I could loan it to him to help him out.
Of course she has money, and of course she would be willing to help her brother buy the one thing that I most strongly dislike in the world. Now I normally would have put my foot down and just said NO. However, I have 2 of my beautiful babies starring back at me willing to be responsible, help each other, and work together. The 3rd and smallest child is just asking if she can look at the kitties again, because that is how we ended up at Petsmart to begin with.
We grabbed a bearded dragon pamphlet and started around the store to see how pricey this thing was going to get. The kids helped add it up and before I knew it we were heading home with this lizard in a cup….in my car. It gives me the willies to even type it.
We got home and set up the Terrarium in my son’s room. We are now the proud owner of Jabu….the bearded dragon. I have touched him, while my husband held him. That is about the extent of my braveness this far. My kids love it, they have taken care of it this far, and are going to work together to get what he needs with their allowance. This is a great way to grow their responsibility and their ability to work with others. Sometimes Mom just gets outnumbered. I just hope he doesn’t escape from his cage!
