I am doing things a little backwards this week and bringing you a savory recipe this weekend and the dessert later in the week. I wanted you to have this recipe for the New Year, and if I see another cookie I may run far far far away. LOL
Black Eyed Peas are one of my hubby’s favorites and have long been a New Year’s Tradition in the South.
The tradition dates back to the Civil War, when Union troops, especially in areas targeted by General William Tecumseh Sherman, typically stripped the countryside of all stored food, crops, and livestock, and destroyed whatever they could not carry away. At that time, Northerners considered “field peas” and field corn suitable only for animal fodder, and did not steal or destroy these humble foods (Wikipedia)
That is your history lesson for the day. 🙂 Anyhow, I know many of you have a ham bone left over from Christmas, so this is the perfect time to put it to use. If you do not have a ham bone left, you can get a ham hock at any local meat department or butcher. I know some of you are going to ask if it is a necessary ingredient. I actually think it is. It adds serious flavor to these other wise bland peas.
You can serve these as a side dish, or even as a meal oven some rice. Either way your house will smell amazing as these simmer in the crockpot all day long. YUM!
Crock Pot Black-Eyed Peas
- 1lb of Dried Black Eyed Peas
- 1 Ham bone or ham hock
- 1 Carton of Chicken Stock 32oz
- 2 tsp cajun seasoning
- Place Dried Peas in a large bowl of water and allow them to soak over night.
- In the morning place the peas, ham bone, seasoning and chicken stock in the crockpot and cover.
- Cook them on low for 8-10 hours.
- Serve alone as a side dish or with rice
**Gluten Free** Make sure you use a gluten free chicken stock

This recipe is super simple. Just soak the peas over night.
The kids love this part because they grow overnight! Fun way to tie in a little learning.
Everybody in the pot and put the lid on. Don’t open in again for about 8 hours. Every time you lift the lid when you are cooking with a crockpot you increase the cooking time by 20 minutes. Really…it’s true! 🙂
When you are done you will have a nice warm bowl of delicious black eyed peas!
