Adopting a family during the holidays is a great way to help a family in need and share your bounty with others, but it might be confusing how to get started. Look at these tips for adopting a family during the holiday season, and see how easy it is to bring holiday joy to others in need!

Tips for Adopting a Family During the Holiday Season

1. Consult a local church or family organization.

If you are looking for a family referral, talk to a local church or family organization. They may be able to give you a recommendation of a family that is seeking assistance. This way, you can be sure you are helping a family that is in need and open to being assisted. Even your child’s school may have family suggestions if you are having trouble locating one.

2. Ask for wish lists.

A wish list can help you get an idea of the family’s needs. Be sure to find out clothing sizes, coat and shoe sizes, toy preferences for the kids, and other relevant information that can help you provide gifts you know they will be able to use. The wish list can be given to the head of the household by the agency or person who referred you.

3. Consider holiday dinner items.

Adding some holiday dinner items is always an excellent idea. Consider giving canned goods, a gift card for a turkey or ham, some fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, and other items that can be used for a holiday dinner. If you are worried about keeping food fresh, you can always give a grocery store gift card.

4. Pick a delivery date before Christmas Eve.

It is a good idea to deliver your items before Christmas Eve so that the family has time to hide it if they have young children. Offer to drop things off to make it easier for the family you are helping.

5. Wrap and label all gifts.

Save the family a little time and wrap gifts for them. Label all of the gifts, so it is easy to see which gifts go to who. You can also include some additional gift bags, and wrapping paper should the family have any of their items they wish to wrap. The free printable gift labels would be perfect for this!

6. Don’t forget to include gift receipts for clothing items.

You don’t want the family to get stuck with items that don’t fit. Be sure to include gift receipts for clothing items so that if they don’t fit, they can return them for an exchange.

7. Make the parents feel special too.

It is always nice to include some small gifts for the parents to enjoy as well. They deserve to feel loved this holiday season so consider some items such as gift cards, socks, kitchenware, and other must-haves for their stocking too!

Adopting a family this holiday season takes some work and effort, but you will find it to be well worth it. Consider these tips for adopting a family this holiday season and see how rewarding it can be.
