What is the number one complaint of most campers? Pests! Mosquito bugs and bites are a sure way to interrupt your camping fun, and keeping these critters at bay can feel like a constant struggle. If you have a camping trip coming up and don’t want to fuss with the bugs, take a look below at 7 ways to repel pests at your campsite. You will find that repelling pests can be simple and easy, it just takes a few tricks. Here is what you need to know!

7 Ways to Repel Pests At Your Campsite

    1. Take a bar of Irish Spring soap with you.
Irish Spring can help repel not just mosquitoes but mice and spiders as well. Break it up into chunks and place it around your tent and campsite for some added protection. You buy this soap at your local dollar store, making this a cheap and effective option.

    2. Burn some sage.
You can buy dried sage bundles on Amazon or at most health food stores. The smoke that sage produces not only smells amazing, but it can help keep bugs away. Just burn the ends like you would incense and allow the smoke to fill the air. Or, you can toss a bundle in your campfire.

    3. Place Vaseline on your chair legs.
Vaseline on the chair legs can keep bugs from crawling up the legs and making their way to you. You can also do this with picnic tables to keep pests from climbing up. Just spread some Vaseline on any area where bugs tend to climb and it will become too slippery for them.

    4. Try some netting.
Use thin netting to protect dining spaces, picnic tables, or sleeping areas. This will help block the mosquitoes as they are too big to slip through the netting. Using netting over food can help keep food items protected as well.

    5. Get rid of all trash.
Take all food scraps and other trash to the appropriate disposal area instead of leaving it out on your site. This way bugs aren’t sniffing out food and telling their friends to follow them! The more food and garbage you leave out, the quicker they are sure to come. At night, store all fresh food items in a cooler and put the cooler in the car so pests can’t sniff it out.

    6. Take a citronella plant.
Keep a potted citronella plant on the center of your picnic table to help repel pests. You can find these at most gardening centers and they are an easy way to brighten up your space as well as keep the biting bugs away.

    7. Try essential oils.
Citronella oil, peppermint oil, and eucalyptus oil can all help with pests. Dab some on your pulse points or if you have an outlet you can diffuse it in the space. As a bonus, peppermint oil will also help keep mice and spiders away.
