Color Blocking Desk Makeover

color blocking desk makeover

I am always keeping my eyes out for an old piece of ugly furniture that can be redone for a great deal. I actually bought this desk off of craigslist 5 years ago for $20. It is solid wood. I painted it at the time to match the girls room, but it had seen better days. It was one of my first projects, and I hadn’t done such a good job.

Styles change and my oldest daughter is now 12 and she wanted an updated look. I was going for a solid classic color like black, or white that way it would grow with her and we could accent her room in other ways. Well, Mom got talked into painting the desk black but painted the drawers colors. Her convincing argument was that it was a lot easier to repaint the drawers instead of the entire desk. I have taught the girl well 😉

Desk Makeover

Here is the before and after. I should have taken a pic before I began sanding and stripping but I didn’t think about it. I painted the desk a solid black, then we chose a purple, tropical blue, and gray for the drawers for a colorblocking effect. I then used some furniture wax to seal the wood to prevent any water damage and make it easier to wipe clean. We are so happy with how it turned out. We are planning on painting her dresser to match.

It is so easy to update old furniture and give it a new and updated look.
