    History of Christmas Gnomes

Scandinavian people believed that elves were house gnomes who guarded their homes against evil. If you were good, the elves were good to you, but if you were bad, the mischievous elves would play tricks on you.

By the mid-1800s, Gnomes and Elves became closely associated. Since there was already a tradition that associated them with storytelling and magic, it was easy for them to take their new role, helping Father Christmas. Christmas Elves were born.

So Christmas Gnomes are the original Elf on the Shelf.

    How to Make

    Craft supplies

    You will Need

    • Felt (for hat)
    • Greenery
    • Pom-Poms (Med/Large for face)(Small for decor)
    • Bell (for hat)
    • Hot Glue Gun
    Greenery and Felt

Place the greenery in the center of your felt square. You want to cut your square in size comparable with your greenery. You may want to play with it a little to choose the right size before you cut and glue.

Pull one side across and glue with your hot glue gun.

Then do the same on the other side. Now your gnome has a hat.

Glue your pom pom right in the center below that hat for your gnomes nose/face.

Now everything else you glue on is for decoration. I glued a bell to the tip of his hat, added some smaller pom-poms for decoration, and finally added a little red twine for trim.

    Fresh or Faux Greenery?

    Greenery Christmas Gnomes

When you are ready to make your Christmas Gnomes do you choose Fresh or Faux greenery? You can use either. Of course, faux greenery can be used year after year to decorate your home. Since this craft is so easy to make, it would be a fun addition to make your gnome out of Fresh Greenery. It would add to its woodland magic.

    Size

    DIY Greenery Christmas Gnomes

I think I love this DIY project so much because it is so flexible. You can make your gnomes as big or as small as you want. Make a big Christmas Gnome and add a hanger on the back. It would make a fun door hanging during the holidays. You can also make a bunch of small Christmas Gnomes and attach them to packages or hide them around your home for a fun farmhouse, Christmas decor.

There isn't a right or wrong size to make your gnomes. Just have fun and enjoy them.
