How to make
Step 1:
Hard boil the eggs. The easiest way is in the Instant Pot. If you haven’t tried Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs, you should.
Step 2:
While the eggs are boiling, cut toilet paper rolls into smaller pieces for egg holders.
Step 3:
As soon as eggs are done boiling, grab the tongs and move the eggs to place them on the toilet paper roll holders. Do not cool them off in cold water
Warning: These will be hot and can burn small children. This is a craft you want to supervise and help kids with.
Step 4:
Use the crayons to draw on the eggs. The heat from the eggs will melt the wax right into the egg shell. Allow the egg to cool completely before trying to move it.
Tips
- The hotter the eggs the easier the wax will melt.
- Use this as a learning opportunity to teach kids about color theory. EX: Yellow + Blue = Green
- Try unique crayons like glitter and metallic for fun effects.
- Snag crayons during back to school sales for as low as $0.25 a box and stash them for projects like this through out the year.
Honestly, there is no right or wrong way to make these. It is a simple technique to try while decorating eggs with your kids.
They love it because they can be as creative as they want while designing their eggs. There is something exciting about watching the colors of the crayon melt down the egg.
