    Homemade Donuts with a ShortCut

DSCN1847If I hear one more time this week, "Mom! Is today Snackurday?  Are you going to make the donuts now? "  I may scream, or have to be committed! 🙂  My son has known this day was coming!  In fact, he has asked that this be "Snack"urday now for weeks.

So, in order to please him, and my cravings for fresh hot donuts, we are making homemade donuts this week.

I don't know how many of you have a Smokey Bones Restaurant close to your house.  We used to.  We would take the kids, and go on occasion for dinner.  One thing we always ordered was the cinnamon sugar donuts for dessert.  Well, you don't have to go to Smokey Bones, because these taste just like them (even better)!

You are going to use a basic bread dough.  To save on time you could purchase the frozen bread dough at the grocery store.  I like to make my own.   That way I know it is Dairy Free for my daughter.  In fact, I made it last night to save time.  It is a great refrigerator dough recipe.  I use the same bread recipe I used when I made Pepperoni Rolls.   For those of you that would like that recipe HERE IS A PRINTABLE VERSION.

This bread dough recipe is so flexible.  It makes the best dinner rolls, but is sweet enough to work for the donuts perfectly.

    Homemade Donuts with a ShortCut

    • Bread Dough
    • Cinnamon Sugar
    • Vegetable Oil

Heat oil in a large skillet, or fryer.  You will want it about 325-350 degrees.

Allow the dough to come to room temperature.

Roll the dough into balls about walnut size.  (These will be like donut holes.)

Drop them in hot oil 2-3 at a time.  You don't want to over crowd the pan.

Cook until golden brown.  Flip if necessary. Sometimes they flip themselves which is cool to watch.

As soon as you remove hot donuts roll in Cinnamon Sugar.  Or for a fun alternative, Drop Donuts and Cinnamon Sugar in a Brown Paper Bag and let the kids shake.

    Enjoy!

I don't know about you, but I am trying to watch my waistline around here.  I only fried up half of the dough recipe for donuts.  The other half is going to be rolls for with dinner tonight.  A win win situation in my book!

I hope you all have a great weekend! We are off to Soccer! Let's all hope for a win!
