Homemade Gravy Mix

homemade gravy mix

I am always looking for ways to cut corners while feeding my family a little healthier in the process.  This time of year if their are mashed potatoes on a plate, my hubby wants to know, “Is there gravy?” I will admit that I am not much of a gravy person.  However I am surrounded by gravy loving people. I have bought the gravy packets many times.  I blame the fact that I didn’t really care for it, so I didn’t want to make it.

Then I stood here in my kitchen and read the back of a gravy packet. ~sigh~ Have you ever read the back of one of those seasoning packets? The ingredients aren’t exactly something you know how to pronounce. If I can’t pronounce it, chances are I don’t want to eat it.  I knew that I could find a simple solution. Here is my gravy short cut.

Recipe type: Mix, Side Dish
Ingredients
  • ½ cup flour
  • 3T beef or chicken stock granules, MSG free
  • 2T onion powder
  • 1T garlic powder
  • ½ tsp ground celery seed
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp ground thyme
Instructions
  1. Mix all of these ingredients together in a bowl.
  2. Repeat as needed however many mixes you want to make.
Prepare
  1. Whisk ¼ cup of mix with 1 cup milk or water. Bring to a boil. Turn heat down and cook for another minute while whisking smooth. Makes a great thick gravy. If you would like it thinner you can add ½ cup more milk or water to the mix.

Of course it wouldn’t be my house if there wasn’t also a gluten free version.

This certainly looks like perfect gravy! I’ll have to give this a try, as I never buy those packets, but sometimes homemade gravy is tricky.

Thanks to I Heart Publix for the link to this recipe :)

Does the gluten free version just make one serving/batch? If I made a double or triple recipe, how much would I use to make one batch?
