Homemade Magic Chocolate Shell
When you are a kid, everything is new and magical! Your dad can pull a nickel out of your ear, the tooth fairy brings you a dollar when you lose a tooth, and Santa can magically fit down the chimney with a bag full of goodies.
One of those magical memories that I can remember clearly was that first trip to Dairy Queen when you ordered that chocolate dipped cone. You watch them dip that cone into a hot tub of chocolate, and within seconds it quits dripping and turns hard. How did they do that? The magic continued when mom bought a bottle of Magic Shell for the ice cream at home. It left you trying to figure it out over and over again.
Well, now you can make magic shell in the comfort of your home with no secret potions or spells. Just Chocolate and coconut oil. Seriously folks…that is it! I was just as shocked as you. This stuff stays runny until you pour it on your ice cream and voila…just like magic, it makes that hard chocolaty shell.
Homemade magic chocolate shell
Gather a bag of your favorite chocolate chips. I used Ghirardelli semi-sweet because they are dairy free…and good! Plus grab your coconut oil. I honestly didn’t keep this in the house until recently, but it is amazing for so many things and much healthier alternative to other oils.
In a microwave safe bowl place 8 oz of chocolate chips ( about 3/4 of a bag) and 2 TBSP of Coconut oil.
Microwave on high for 30 seconds and then stir. Return to microwave for another 30 seconds. Stir well, and it should look like the chocolate above.
Pour over ice cream or dip a cone and you will be in homemade magic chocolate shell heaven in no time! 🙂
Hi, I was curious is it ends up tasting like coconut,I love magic shell and dipped cones but am not a coconut fan.
It has a faint coconut flavor. If you want you can try substituting butter or margarine. However, I have not tried that myself to see if it turns out the same. Coconut has a low melting temperature which makes it perfect for this shell.
Amanda and Kathy,
You can use ‘expeller pressed’ coconut oil and it will not have the coconut taste. Still the same health benefits, though. ENJOY!
This looks so good! I remember Magic Shell growing up! It was such a treat to get it! I am wondering if you can substitute coconut manna for the coconut oil? I ask only because I just ordered some manna & I don’t have the oil.
I was wondering how long it keeps? Do you have to use it all the day you make it – or can you save it for later in a closed container – like Magic Shell.
You can save it although you may need to reheat it slightly. It never lasts that long so I am not sure the exact shelf life. 🙂
Can you store this like they do in the bottle or do you have to use it when made?
You can store it in a room temperature container. Although you may need to reheat it slightly when you get ready to use it again.
Wow. What a great idea. I usually just melt wax candles in to my chocolate to make magic shell. JUST KIDDING! Seriously, this is a great and simple recipe. I can’t waiti to try it. Thanks.
LOL. You had me going, Coupon Clipper. I was thinking, “Holy $h!#, I hope this whack doesn’t have kids.” Thanks for the chuckle.
I would like to experiment with some peanut butter added to this, so it is like the Reese’s magic shell.
Oooh. Carmen. Try Peanut butter chips! 🙂 I bet that would work!
You are amazing. I’ve been following your recipes per Totally Target. And I’m impressed with everything you’ve given. I will have to say this takes the cake. 🙂 Thanks.
Lisa, Did you mean, “… this totally takes the ice cream?” lol!
Tried this and it is very good….
My kids LOVED this! I kinda liked it to 😉 We’re gonna do it again tomorrow!
I used this recipe last week. I used milk chocolate. To me it has a smoother taste. I made a Chocolate Cake Roll filled with Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. After freezing the roll, I took it out and covered it in the coating. I wrote happy 21st Birthday in white then put it back into the freezer. It looked very nice and the chocolate was the best part. You have to let it sit/thaw or it will not cut well. Thanks it was fun to try.
I have been making homemade Magic Shell for about a year now. I am seriously in love with Magic Shell and feel like an expert on making this now. 🙂 To answer some of the other posters: as far as I know, you pretty much have to use coconut oil. Coconut oil has a very low melting point, which makes it have very unique characteristics. It is solid at less than 74ish degrees, but liquid at higher temps. Which makes it PERFECT for something like Magic Shell. You want Magic Shell to be liquid at around room temp, but harden quickly when put on a cold substance like ice cream. So I don’t really think you can substitute out the coconut oil with anything else.
However, if you don’t like the taste of coconut, you can get refined coconut oil; it doesn’t taste like coconut at all. Personally, I use unrefined organic coconut oil (it has many health benefits) and there is a slight coconut taste to it, but it only adds to the overall flavor, not distracts. And I HATE coconut otherwise (but I think I mostly dislike the texture of coconut rather than the taste…).
ALSO, if you read the back of real Magic Shell bottle, it also lists sunflower oil as an ingredient. I think this is important, as the use of another kind of oil helps the homemade “magic shell” not get too hard when cold on your ice cream. I usually put a small amount (maybe 1/2 – 1 tsp? I don’t measure it, just eyeball it) of olive oil in my homemade magic shell concoction. I think it makes a huge difference to help keep the magic shell softer and not as hard and brittle when cold.
Thanks so much! What a fun recipe 😊 It worked perfectly. My kids absolutely loved it!
I’ve been searching for magic shell forever! Can’t wait to (gulp) try it..
