It’s Christmas Time! The kids and I love finding great gift ideas we can make ourselves! My girls are at that age where they have discovered Bath & Body Works. They go in and oooh and ahhh over all of the girly smelly things. Then I get those long eyelashes batted at me because I am supposed to fork over HUGE GOBS of money to buy all of these girly smelly things. Then they get mad at Me because I say “No.” Those things are very very pricey. They are only for special occasions.
Unfortunately that means I say no to myself too. One of the pre-kid luxuries that I loved was the Brown Sugar Vanilla Body Scrub. That stuff is around $15 a jar if not more. So imagine the shock on my face when I found out that I could make it myself for pennies and my skin would feel and smell just as soft and luxurious. SERIOUSLY!
So this is one of my favorite D.I.Y. recipes because not only is it fun to give, it is fun to receive, and fun to share the recipe!
First things first….you need to gather your ingredients, and the containers you are going to put the finished scrub in. You can recycle old container, find fun canisters at yard sales & goodwill, or use the small jelly mason jars like these. I chose some mason jars I had.
In a bowl you are going to mix equal parts Brown Sugar and granulated sugar and 2 Tbsp of Salt. This is a great job for kids.
You then stir in an equal part of Olive Oil. You could really use any type of oil: coconut oil, vegetable oil, even mineral oil (just label it non-edible).
You will then mix in some vanilla extract. I did 1 tablespoon but you could add more if desired. You could also mix things up by adding peppermint extract, orange extract, or whatever floats your boat. Your scrub will look like above. Just enough to dampen the sugar but not slushy.
You are then going to add the scrub to the desired containers. Leave a little space at the top and add additional oil. About 1/4 cup for a 6 oz jar.
You will end up with the best Brown Sugar Body Scrub EVER! Seal up and decorate with a ribbon and a gift tag. Another fun addition is a small spoon. I like snagging these at the thrift store for pennies. They are great to give with this Sugar Scrub and with these Homemade Bath Salts.
- In a bowl whisk together sugars & Salt until mixed evenly.
- Stir in 1 Cup of Oil until the whole bowl is damp.
- Mix in extract and fill desired containers leaving 1/2 inch headspace.
- Add additional oil to containers to fill. I used 1/4 cup to finish a 6 oz jar.
- Seal and give as gifts with a spoon or use yourself.
