Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe
Skip store-bought and make your own with this simple Homemade Onion Soup Mix Recipe. Perfect for making soup, seasoning burgers, and more!
I love making things homemade. It gives me a sense of accomplishment, and it just makes me feel better about what my family is eating. We love to use this Homemade Onion Soup Mix to flavor so many dishes at our house…especially the closer we get to the fall. The store bought brands have Gluten, MSG, and a lot of other stuff that I can’t pronounce. So I have chosen to make my own.

How to Make Onion Soup Mix
Very simply mix all of the dry ingredients together in a jar or bowl. Store them in an airtight container until ready to use. I love using mason jars for this.
Where to Buy Ingredients
Many of the ingredients in this are everyday items you probably already have in your pantry. The dried onion and the beef bouillon granules might be a little harder to find.
You can purchase both in bulk at a warehouse store like Sams or Costco. You can also find them online in bulk at Amazon.
Uses
There are so many uses for Homemade Onion Soup Mix. A few of my favorites are…
- Seasoning on a Roast Beef
- Mix in for Hamburgers
- Added flavor in a casserole
- Stir into some sour cream to create a delicious dip
If you have a great use for it I would love to hear in the comments below!
How Much to Use
If you are trying to match a recipe that calls for 1 packet of onion soup mix and you are wondering how much of this to use I have an answer for you.

Hi Amanda! This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing. Is this something you have to make and use right away or can you store it in the pantry for awhile? Have you?
Thanks!
Denise
As long as it is in an airtight container you can store it for a while. 😉
Thanks! I hate using onion soup mix due to all the chemicals in it, but love the taste it gives recipes. Now I can use it again guilt free!
Where do you get beef bullion powder that doesn’t have MSG in it? I can’t find it anywhere!

Thanks for posting this. I didn’t know this was something I could make myself. Next time I go to the Amish store I will have to pick up beef bouillon granules.
Hi Amanda, I have tried a couple of your homemade versions of things and they have been fantastic!! I am really interested in this onion soup mix in particular. I dislike using Lipton’s version but love the way it makes a hamburger patty taste and be so juicy. So I love your recipe. I can’t say as I have ever seen dried onion in a grocery store, however, I have never looked. Where do you get dried onion (would it normally be found in the spice sections?) or are you making this on your own? Also, where do you get beef bullion granules? I clicked on the link you provided to another person, however, it is no longer available. I would really appreciate any advice you can offer Amanda! Thanks a bunch!!
Hi Jennifer! I usually find the dried onions with the spices at my store. Herbox and Wylers both make beef bouillon granules. You can do a quick search. 2020 is a crazy year for things and seems to be making basics harder to find. I was able to locate them at Amazon and Walmart typically has them also. Worst case scenario 1 bouillon cube = 1 tsp. You could always get a cube and smash it. LOL Hope this helps!
