Homemade Brownie Mix

I have been on a D.I.Y. rampage lately.  I am really trying to stay away from packaged and processed foods.  My kids still love to have treats in the house, and don’t understand why I am not buying their favorite treats.  Instead of giving in I have just been making a lot from scratch.  This brownie mix is great to make in large batches and put in bags or jars to have on hand.

I also, love this because I can make it gluten free, which makes it super friendly for everyone in my house.  Gluten free brownie mix costs $4+ a box.  So this is a money saver too. Don’t miss all of these other great D.I.Y. Recipes too!  You can make so many things yourself!

  1. Speaking of DIY, we blogged about our blow-your-mind butterscotch pudding. We tried this and vowed never to go back to the box! This brownie mix is right up our alley – thanks!

I tried these the other day. They were a little too sweet for our taste, but the texture was really good! I’m going to cut back on the sugar a bit the next time I make them and see how it tastes! Thank you for all you do! I really appreciate all the recipes!!

  3. used your recipe, and added baileys
    so great! thanks

  4. What if I wanted to make a huge bunch of this dry mix and keep it all in one container? How much would I use for one batch?

  5. Please look into Xanthum gum. It is an additive that a lot of people are allergic too and is an ADDITIVE used in processing food. If the recipe works without it, I recommend not using it!

  6. Hello all ~ I made these with one cup of sugar as opposed to two cups; I used mostly coconut oil with just a bit of butter (for my family, all coconut oil); three-fourths coconut flour & one fourth whole wheat. They tasted great. Typically, if a recipe does not contain yeast, decreasing the sugar will have no effect on texture. Enjoy!

I made changes: did 1/2 cup whole wheat flour and 3/4 white, added a pkg of powdered flaxseeds, 1 cup sugar (not 2) and about 3/4 cup pumpkin and 1/4 butter instead of 1 cup margerine.
Just took them out of the oven. They are tasty. Not as sweet as a store bought box, but good, nevertheless. And soooo much better–no preservatives, some whole wheat flour, some flaxseed, some pumpkin and less sugar. I found you on pinterest and will start following your blog. I love DIY food things!

  8. Thanks for posting this–came, over from Pinterest. I’m going to have to try these with my daughter. :)

  9. Made these tonight and they are delicious! The whole family loved them. I followed the recipe exactly and they turned out great. This is one of the last things i was still making from the box and now i dont have to anymore. Thanks!

Made these the other night and I added about a teaspoon of cayenne pepper because we love spice in our chocolate. They were a hit! Moist and cake-like. Any tips on how to make them fudgy-er?

  11. Sherri C. says:

You can also make these healthier but substituting a 1/2 cup of butter for 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce.

  12. I believe to make them fudgy instead of cake-like, add 2 eggs instead of 3. That’s the rule for the boxed version, so I see no reason why it wouldn’t apply here…Thanks so much for sharing–trying it with 2 eggs today!

I made these this morning, and was amazed. They were easy to make, didn’t take any weird ingredients, just simple and delicious. I used the recipe exactly as it is written, and they are amazing. No more boxed mixes in my house from now on. They also made a large pan, a good amount for a bake sale or to take to work and share.
