Seeds or Seedlings?

The first problem to solve is do you want to start your garden with seeds or purchase seedlings? While seedlings are easier because they have already sprouted, they can be more costly. Starting an herb garden from seeds is an easy job. If you have children it is so much fun to watch their eyes light up when the seeds begin to sprout. You an typically pick up herb seeds from any lawn and garden center.

Containers

Since you are creating an indoor herb garden there are a couple things to consider when it comes to containers. You want something that matches your interior decor, but you also want the containers to be functional. Make sure you are choosing containers with proper drainage and that are the right size for the herbs you will be growing.

Light

Plants need a good light source to grow properly. If you have a window in your kitchen you are off to a great start. This is the perfect place to put your new Indoor Herb Garden. No window? No problem! There are so many wonderful and affordable indoor grow lights now that eliminate the need to keep your plants near a window. They give off the perfect amount of light to keep your indoor herb garden growing.

Fertilizer and Soil

Choose your soil for your Indoor Herb Garden correctly. Typically you are going to want a garden soil mix. I like to use an organic soil since I will be feeding the herbs directly to my family. I treat the fertilizer the same way. Choose an organic garden fertilizer to feed your plants once a month while watering. This will keep your herb growing and healthy so you have plenty to cook with.

How Many Plants?

Gardening teaches the wonderful virtue of patience. You must wait for your seeds to sprout and your plants to grow. Once you have an idea of how much of your herb garden you will use personally you can gauge if you need more of one herb or another. I personally have a couple cilantro plants because we just love it! I also keep extra parsley because it makes such a nice plate garnish. If you grow too much you can always share with friends and family, dry your own herbs, or even freeze them for later use.

This is a great project to give to kids that makes them feel like they are really contributing to the house.

If you love having indoor plants you should think about adding some Aloe Vera to your indoor garden!
